A New proTection devIce for FOD (ANTIFOD)

Participants: UPC, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER, TF, ARA LIMITED, PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY

The main objective of this innovation action is to develop a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) protection device applied to an electrical ECS fresh air inlet, validated to TRL5. This will be achieved through the following two-stage design process, each with their own secondary objectives:
1. Preliminary design, which aims to: a. capture the top level requirements through a survey of the user needs and used to develop a set of baseline candidate concepts. b. use innovative design methods to conduct a concept study. c. verify prototypes rapidly using a combination of CFD and additive manufacturing, as measured by comparing calculated separation efficiency and pressure loss. d. refine the highly ranked concepts via a trade-off study and determine the best suited solution that meets all the top-level requirements, measured through a scoring system. e. produce a preliminary design from the winning concept, including feasibility study, sensitivity analysis, risk assessment, and system requirements report, measured through a preliminary design review (PDR) which demonstrates compliance with the user needs.
2. Detailed design, which aims to: a. define an aerodynamic geometry for the intake protection and FOD separation device which demonstrably meets the relevant requirements and integrates with the mechanical interfaces of the existing intake scoop inlet, scoop ducting and eECS inlets, and is measured through Wall-Modelled LES simulations. b. produce a detailed design and subsequent manufacture of the full-scale intake protection and FOD separation device. c. design a test bench to validate the intake protection and FOD separation device. d. deliver a final full-scale working prototype to the Topic Leader which demonstrably meets the user needs, as measure.

Efficient FAN (EFFAN)

Participants: CleanSky, UPC, Baltogar S.A.U, TF.

Summary:  In all-electrical aircrafts, the corresponding electrical ram air fan should be optimized in order to improve its current design in two aspects: a)generate pressure drop at low flows without surge issues; b)cooling of the fan electrical motor at high inlet air temperatures. Considering these objectives, a new fan concept will be selected from available bibliographic and consortium expertise, and designed using the consortium skills in deep fundamental fluid mechanics and heat transfer knowledge (Technical University of Catalonia - UPC), advanced CFD tools and aerodynamic know-how (TF) and engineering capacities of a fan manufacturer (BALTOGAR). The proposed design related to surge problem will be implemented in a prototype and tested accordingly. In a similar manner, a solution for electrical motor cooling will be found. The final solution must also consider its impact on the whole ECS pack, in order to maintain its global performance objectives.

Innovation project for Airtècnic’s new generation air curtains

Participants: Airtècnics. Motors i Ventiladors S.L., UPC, TF.

Summary: The main objectives of the project where the optimization of the air curtain discharge plenum. Focusing on a better orientation of the curtain jet and a decrease of the turbulence level of the flow.  Hence, obtaining  a better energy efficiency product. Furthermore, multijet  air curtain where also optimized. In order to deliver an optimal design of the air curtains, extensive LES simulation of Airtècnic's prototypes using TermoFluids technology  and the UPC HPC facilities have been curried out. Moreover, experimental validation of the numerical results  have been also successfully achieved.

ConSOLI+DA Consorcio Solar de Investigación y Desarrollo

Participants: Abengoa, UPC, TF, etc.

Summary: The mains objectives of ConSOLI+DA where, to improve the high temperature solar Spaniard technology. TF role was to develop innovative tools in order to simulate central tower receivers using HPC facilities. Thus, as a result of the project TF owns highly advanced software capable of predicting the behavior of the turbulence and fluid dynamics characteristics of CSP receivers by the means of LES modeling and the use of HPC facilities.
